What with the Ashes due any minute I thought I'd stick this up. I found it years ago flipping through old copies of Private Eye. On the face of it all very English, but I'm not sure I really believe in so called national characteristics. Won't other countries find admirable all the virtues and traits that we claim as quintessentially English? I imagine Greeks (for instance) are just as appreciative of understatement; that Germans are just as likely to admire stoicism in the face of adversity.
