Something changed

I only caught the last twenty odd minutes but I was disappointed by Jarvis Cocker's performance on tonight's Question Time. He should have romped home on the question of renationalizing the railways but was just a bit incoherent. He almost redeemed himself with his comments on Michael Jackson but blew it at the last minute, sealing his ultimate admiration for Jackson with the lame "Hey, he invented the Moonwalk!". The only interesting snippet I've heard from the acres of coverage is that Jackson actually took the move from some other guy.

Previously, in every single appearance, comment or interview over the last ten or more years I thought that he just got everything spot on. Oh well, they get old and they can't hack it anymore. I still think he deserves a statue outside Sheffield town hall though.

  1. Cooker is very smart. I don’t know if I agree with you that he deserves a statue outside Sheffield Town Hall, though. I think he has copied Steve Took from Tyrannosaurs Rex too much. Or what do I know, it may be just a coincidence they have the same style of singing.

  2. Morning Ande - I had a quick listen and I can't hear the resemblance myself. I read his entry on Wikipedia as well - they didn't have much luck in that band did they? What a way to go.

  3. Hi Artog

As an artist, Steve Took deserved more then he got. I got the feeling of similarity between Jarvis and Steve Took when listening to MySpace, especially “Beautiful Deceiver” (fr 1970). Don’t know if you’ve heard it, if not, compare this song with the mid 90´s Cocker.

    Look at: http://www.myspace.com/stevetook

  4. Hi again Aertdog,

Hmm I rather meant Cocker from the beginning of the 90’s. I’m not a specialist; I have mostly listened to his hits… I was struck by the likeness when listening to “Common People.”

Hmm, I don’t mean to sound like a sodding bessewisser. :)

  5. Right, I've had a listen and...he does sound a bit like him. I'd heard of Took through T.REX but I didn't know he'd released solo stuff, been good mates with Syd Barrett and died so young. On the strength of "Amanda" and "Beautiful Deceiver" I'd say you're right, he does deserve a bit more recognition.

  6. I thought he was fine on Question Time, although I wish he could have come up with some sort of retort when Ian Duncan-Smith started laughing derisively at a perfectly reasonable point Jarvis was making (about nationalizing the railways, if memory serves). Pompous Tory twat.

    Hello, by the way!

  7. Hello Kippers! He just lacked oomph. I'm worried to say that I thought the best response to Duncan-Smith's snorting on privatisation came from Peter Hitchens (the bonkers Tory twat).

  8. That worried me too! When we start agreeing with people like him, we really must be in trouble. He had a point on this one, though.
